A major aim of the EOS is to help people distinguish between abuse and consensual eroticism. These can be easily confused. To an outsider, sexual role-playing that involves bondage or spanking can appear to be non-consensual. Indeed, the appearance of non-consensual activity is part of the thrill.

The EOS organizes and sponsors workshops in addition to its less formal gatherings. Such workshops contain a variety of topics meant to help the new and experienced alike learn more about safety and health issues and practices, develop new skills, and also partake in “fun” activities like “toy” building sessions.
